Cross Dressing Makeup & Style Tips for Afro-American and dark skin:

African-American skin needs special attention to unify skin tone, downplay overly prominent features and focus on the upper third of the face. The structure of facial features and the evenness of skin color are important in order to create a great look. Always avoid oil based products to make your makeup last longer since black skin has a tendency to reject makeup. Select a foundation tone that is between the ligthest and darkest coloring of your skin, as well as a tone slightly darker for shading. Use concealer to hide uneven skin tone. And always use a powder, that is transparent or slightly tinted to avoid a shinny look.

Lips: Great shades include dark plums, mochas, chocolates, burgandies and deep berry shades. Soft pinks are pretty. Avoid oranges, they will clash with the yellow undertones of dark skin and wash you out.

tgCosmetics Lipshades that look great with dark skin and dark hair: Goddess, Rapture, Maddness, Vamp, Hocus Pocus, Diva, Red Alert, Matador Red, Quartz, Cafe, Silk, Parisian Pink, Scarlet, Eruption, Rum Raison, Rouge, Mulberry, Blaze, Attitude.

The eyes should be accented with dark browns, copper, beiges, prunes and burgundies. Avoid light, powdery colors and iridescent color that covers the whole eyelid. A light brushing of loose, translucent powder over the lid will give a subtle glow for evening glamour.

Blush shades should be in reds, pinks or burgundies. Do the same for lips and nail colors. If your nose is wide, slim it by shading the sides with a darker tone. If your brows are too thick, thin them just enough to brush them neatly.

If more of an arch is desired, draw in the shape that you like and tweeze below the line. Never use a black pencil alone on your brows, it’s better to combine it with a gray or charcoal pencil or powder.

Cross Dressing Style Tips
"An unadorned woman is like an exquisite painting without a frame." -Simon J. Critchell.

Silver, gold and sparkling jewelry contrast beautifully against dark skin. Silver costs less than gold but, like moonlight, it casts a beautiful glow and becomes cool and bohemian when worn with black.

Try a scarf of simmering pewter, silver or an animal print to transform a simple pantsuit or monochromatic outfit to give it the right sass and panache. A scarf tied in an attractive way or a pin on the shoulder can distract from a thick waist.

Test the size and shape of your hand bag in front of a mirror before you buy it. One too small or large can distort your whole presentation.

A Few General Tips for Cross dressing:
Applying makeup: Take your time with makeup, don’t rush it. Practice before you go out. Consider finding a transgender makeover artist who can walk you through the application steps and tips.
Beard: Shave closely with a cream or gel. Follow our tgCosmetics tips for applying foundation. Be sure to use a beard cover foundation if you have a visible beard.
Breasts: Invest in a quality breast forms. Don’t fake this shape with padding or stockings. Check out our link partner, The Breast Forms Store on our links page for a friendly resource.
Hair: Get rid of unfeminine hair. Shave under arms. Use a depilatory cream on your arms (legs) if they are hairy. It will last longer than shaving. You can find depilatory creams in the drugstore. Trim nose and ear hair. Shave any stray hairs on neck. Consider electrolysis or laser hair removal if you are concerned about excessive hair or heavy beard areas.
Skin care: Take good care of your skin to keep it soft. Makeup always looks better on softer, smoother skin, Exfoliate skin with tgCosmetics AHA products or exfoliation cleansers. Use a facial cleanser (not soap), toner and moisturizer daily, it does make a difference in improving skin texture. Clay masques are great for firming and plumping skin.
Hips: If you have a thick waist, invest in padded panties to give yourself a more attractive, feminine shape. Wear a girdle to slim the waistline.
Nails: Take time to manicure your nails. If you don’t know much about nail care, have a manicure done from a professional and ask questions. Also check out our tgCosmetics nail tips section.
Brows: Brows are very important to your look. Keep them groomed by plucking stray hairs. If you cannot get away with shaping them into an arch, try tgCosmetics brow cover and concealing foundation to cover them and draw in your preferred brow with pencil and/or pressed powder.
Moving and holding yourself in a feminine way is important in passing. Observe how women move, gesture, walk, and talk as a reference. Then practice with a mirror or friend.
Restrooms: When you are out and dressed, if you have to go to the restroom, use the ladies room, not the men's. Plan ahead, avoid drinking to much and seek un-crowded rest rooms.
